MAP NOTES
This map was new, created by Mark Dominie, and completed in March 2020. It uses the 2017 ISOM symbol set, plus a number of the usual Dominie additions and variations. There is not enough space for a legend to be included on the map, so a legend document has been created, which you can download below and print.
A number of things at Rotary changed since March 2020. In particular, there are two sections which were logged, one in 2020, and another in 2021. Those areas are shown on the map with Mark’s “logging” symbol (45-degree yellow bars). By now, in 2024, the “slash” has settled down quite a bit, and the edges of the area are passable. There are a couple of controls in those edges, and we don’t think there should be difficulties.
As usual, there may be some things you will come across (notably rootstocks and boulders) which are not on the map (particularly if you stray from the optimal line), but what is on the map is there. Quite a number of point features and vegetation levels have been added/changed on the map since 2022, and the boundaries have been corrected. There is an odd line at the north end where our LIDAR data changed from better to poorer, such that vegetation could not be derived. We felt it better to include the better data we have now, rather than just go with the 2020 vegetation levels.
The white woods forest is pretty open, so visibility should be good. There is no dark green on the map, and the only medium green is in swamps you wouldn’t want to cross anyway. The area does not have many of the huge boulders you may remember from Pineridge (which is nearby), but it is rocky, with many small cliffs and marshes. The terrain is more like Grafton Lakes, but less developed beyond the Scout campsites. Stonewalls are present, but sporadic and generally not as useful for navigation as those at Thacher or Grafton Lakes.
