Rotary Scout Reservation Notes

May 30, 2026

Start Window: 11 am – 1 pm

Address: 279 Davitt Lake Rd, Averill Park, NY 12018
518-283-4794

Parking, Registration, and Start area: On a GPS, the address above will take you to the Reservation Maintenance Bldg/House.  That house is on the access road to the Reservation.  FOLLOW THE ORANGE/WHITE ORIENTEERING SIGNS past the house, through the gate, continue for a 400m or so on the dirt road, take a left at the open field where you can park. The Registration/Start area is close, and obvious, to the parking field.

Map Notes

This map was used for an EMPO NRE in MAY ’22, and in September ’24. It’s since been used for more than one local event. The map was created by Mark Dominie. He completed it in March 2020. It uses the 2017 ISOM symbol set, plus a number of the usual Dominie additions and variations. It was significantly updated for both of the NRE events.

Many things at Rotary changed since March 2020. At the time of this writing, (early MAY) the forest is quite open.  Orienteering features will certainly be more difficult to see as the vegetation grows with the rains and sun before this end of MAY meet. There is no dark green (thick vegetation known as “fight”) on the map, and the only medium green is in swamps you wouldn’t want to cross anyway. The marshes are certainly crossable but will likely get wetter in the coming weeks. The area does not have many of the huge boulders you may remember from Pineridge (which is nearby), but it is rocky, with many small cliffs and marshes. The terrain is more like Grafton Lakes, but less developed beyond the Scout campsites. Stone walls are present, but sporadic and generally not as useful for navigation as those at Thacher Park or Grafton Lakes. There is a significant yellow-thatched area mapped on the eastern side. That area was logged and cleared several years ago. It is runnable.
