Club Championships, November 2021

Meet Director: Grant Staats, gstaats099@gmail.com, c518-424-4823

When:
Saturday, November 13, 2021 – This will be a “traditional” meet with physical gathering. SI timing will be enabled with downloading after you complete your course.
Register/Start Window is 10:00 am – 12:00 noon.

No Contact/Self-timed event – Any time between November 14 and 21, at your convenience
The Usynligo phone app may be used for any of the courses.

Where: Niskayuna Lock-7 (Mohawk River).  Park your car at the “boat launch” lot at
1560-1598 Lock 7 Rd, Niskayuna, NY 12309

How to get to the start: There is an open area 50m to the southeast from the parking lot.  It is hard to miss as you must drive past it to get to the parking lot.  Expect a small easy-up registration shelter to be setup there for the physical event. Course Starts are in this open area.  No-contact courses start there as well.

What to expect on the course: On Saturday, Nov. 13 there will be traditional “Foot-O” orienteering courses with Controls and SportIdent timing. Finger sticks/chips can be rented at registration for a nominal fee if you do not have your own. You can also use UnsynligO. From Nov. 14-21 UsynligO self-timing ONLY is available. There will be orange streamers (surveyors tape) at the features, but no controls or SportIdent timing.

The forest (see picture below) is quite open and runnable in many areas but thicker, slow moving off trail terrain certainly exists if you so choose.  There is a well mapped trail network throughout the entire forest creating many route options.

Weather impacts: Orienteering is a rain-or-shine recreation. At the time of this writing the weather is expected to be partly cloudy and in the low-50’s. It looks to be rainy on Friday, Nov. 12 – therefore, expect the trails to be quite soupy/muddy and the forest to be spongy – creeks will be wet/running.

Course maps: The easiest way of getting the maps is downloading them from this page or from the UsynligO site. They come in PDF format and it requires that you print them out at home on regular letter sized paper. I recommend putting the map in a plastic bag, as home printed maps are usually sensitive to sweat or rain. Map scale is 1:10,000.
Please note that the Green and Red maps have been modified since the Nov. 13 event so make sure you download the updated version either from the links below or from UsynligO!

Link to YELLOW (2.2 km)

Link to GREEN (4.2 km)

Link to RED (5.6 km)

Control descriptions are printed on the map.

In case printing is not an option for you, please contact Phil on the email address you sent PayPal payment to. He will mail out maps upon request for an extra fee.

Timing: SportIdent electronic punching will be used on Saturday, Nov. 13. You can rent finger-sticks/chips at registration for a nominal fee if you do not have your own.

The Nov. 14-21 segment is NON-CONTACT. These Orienteering events are typically self-timed, honor-system events where you are on your own to start/stop your timers and send your results back to the meet director once out of the forest…and back home.  You will likely be the only Orienteer there at the time of your experience. There is also the UsynligO Orienteering phone app– the maps have been uploaded to UsynligO and are available for control proximity signaling and timing your run.

Facilities and supplements: There is a porta-potty in the parking lot.  There will be no water on the courses.  There will be light snacks and water refreshments at the finish on Nov. 13.

By downloading or purchasing the map, you have accepted the waiver .

Club Championship Details

Anyone can enter and compete on the courses, but to be an EMPO Champion the usual rules apply:

  • You can compete in any Class for which you qualify (by age), but you must declare the Class you are competing in prior to going out on your course.
  • Courses completed during the week of ribbons-only (UsynligO) will count for Club Champs; after that, while the course are still available, they will not be considered for Club Champs
